New York - On September 25,2007, during an emotive ceremony, President Michelle Bachelet launched the Gabriela Mistral Foundation. The event was attended by renowned members of the academic, cultural and the political world in New York. President Bachelet spoke about the life and work of the great Chilean poet, her beginnings in northern Chile, and her career as an educator in Chile’s public school system. President Bachelet also highlighted Gabriela Mistral’s impressive trajectory that led her to be the first Latin American to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945 and her unyielding love for her native country and its children. On this occasion, Ambassador Heraldo Muñoz and Mario J. Paredes, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation’s Board of Directors respectively, thanked the audience and President Bachelet and presented her with a sculpture of Gabriela Mistral.
